What is ADB (ash dieback)?
Ash dieback is a serious disease that affects ash trees (genus Fraxinus), caused by the fungal pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. The disease has devastated ash tree populations in many parts of Europe, North America, and Asia.
Key Features of Ash Dieback
Symptoms:
– Leaf wilting and blackened veins.
– Dieback of shoots and branches, often starting at the crown and progressing downward.
– Dark lesions on stems, branches, and bark.
– Premature leaf drop and eventual death of affected trees.
Management: No cure exists, but management efforts include:
– Identifying and preserving resistant ash trees.
– Removing and disposing of infected trees to reduce fungal spread.
– Avoiding movement of infected wood.
Ash dieback is a stark example of the impact of invasive pathogens on native species, highlighting the importance of biosecurity and conservation efforts.
