Fully Qualified
What is British Standard 3998
BS 3998 refers to the British Standard for “Tree Work – Recommendations.” It provides guidelines and recommendations for arboricultural practices, including tree surgery and the management of trees. The standard covers various aspects of tree work, such as pruning, maintenance, and the management of trees in different environments.
Crown Reduction
The ‘crown’ is the foliage-bearing part of the tree and a ‘crown reduction’ is the overall reduction of the tree structure. We achieve this by reducing the crown area from the tips of the branches to suitable growth points in line with its current shape.
Crown Thinning
Crown thinning involves the removal of smaller secondary branches, usually on the outer part of the crown of the tree, to create an evenly balanced structure. Branches are removed methodically and should not exceed more than 30% of the overall volume. The overall shape of the crown will not change but a noticeable difference can be seen.
Crown Lifting
Crown Lifting involves the removal of the primary or secondary branches of the tree. The maximum diameter of any cut carried out during a crown lift should be 10cm or less. This is to reduce the likelihood of potential decay.

Enhance Structural Integrity
Dead Wooding
This is a process of selectively removing dead, dying, or diseased branches or limbs from a tree. This practice improves the overall health and safety of the tree. Dead wood can pose a risk as it becomes brittle and is more prone to breakage. This is especially true during storms or adverse weather conditions. By selectively pruning and removing dead wood, we aim to enhance the tree’s structural integrity, reduce the risk of falling branches, and promote the overall well-being of the tree.
